  • Notes
    • Lost all his money in the stock market crash of 1929 and was deeply in debt. He had bought Insull stock. (Mary Baranik)
"Samuel Insull (1859-1938) was a business man who became president of the Chicago Edison Company in 1892 which became the Commonwealth Edison Company. He became a powerful utilities and transportation magnate in Chicago which included the elevated lines (L). The stock market crash of Oct 1929 and the Great Depression had a devastating effect for him and the investors. One of his business strategies was to solicit many small investments from people of modest means." see www.chicago-L.org historic figures

Paddy was living at his sister Nora's home at 523 N. Trumbull in Chicago before entering Manteno State Hospital. (death certificate)

Patrick O'Connor was born in Ballyguiltenane on 10 September 1886 and was the youngest son of Thomas and Mary. He emigrated to the USA at the age of 22, sailing to New York on the Majestic on 20 May 1909. According to the Ellis Island record, he was going to join his cousin John O'Connor at 123 East 100 Street, New York. It is not certain that this is correct: it is more likely that he was going to his first cousin John O'Connell, who was living at this address at the time. In 1944 he moved to Chicago, Illinois, where he was working as a flagman. It is not known whether he ever came home again to Ireland. He never married, and died of bronchial pneumonia on 28 July 1949 at the age of 62. He was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Chicago on 1 August 1949.
